Typescripts of letters written by Asa S. Barton of Ludlow, Vermont to Hiland H. Gutterson of Andover, Vermont. In the letters Barton writes of people and events in Andover and Ludlow, Vermont, and of his religious beliefs, including comments on Calvinism, mesmerism, and Burchard's revival in Woodstock, Vermont. The correspondence was initiated by Gutterson to gather material for the Andover history in Abby Hemenway's Vermont Historical Gazetteer. The letters were transcribed by Rev. Harvey A. Farrar around 1939 for the Pioneer Memorial Society.

Asa S. Barton was born on September 11, 1799 in Andover, Vermont, the son of Rufus and Lydia (Washer) Barton. He left Andover in 1818, moving to Ludlow, Vermont. He was uncle to Abby Maria Hemenway, editor the the Vermont Historical Gazetter. He died on July 19, 1871 in Ludlow, Vermont. Hiland H.
